Maths & Numeracy
The Course
All students will study the new GCSE Double Award - Mathematics and Numeracy. Mathematics is one of the fundamental subjects underpinning all science and technology. We want students to see the learning of Mathematics as a lifelong experience, which will help them to approach situations with confidence. We want then to appreciate that Mathematics and Numeracy will be useful outside the classroom and can also be used to help in other GCSEs including: Business Studies, Computer Science, Food and Nutrition, Geography and Technology.
Course Content
The Mathematics course comprises of 3 units:
Unit 1: Financial Mathematics and Other Applications of Numeracy (30% of qualification)
The aims of this unit is to develop learners’ understanding of topics and concepts that link to finance and develop their financial literacy, whilst also applying in other real-life contexts.
Unit 2: Non-calculator (30% of qualification)
The aims of this unit is to develop learners’ non-calculator methods and concepts and contains all aspects of probability and has a significant focus on geometry.
Unit 3: Calculator allowed (40% of qualification)
The aims of this unit is to explore concepts that are more appropriate for calculator use. Learners will explore the majority data handling aspects of statistics and a significant proportion of measures.
Students will need to use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts, as well as apply the functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations.
Course Structure
The three units will be assessed at two tiers:
Higher Graded A* - C, U
Unit 1: 1 hr 45 mins (80 marks)
Unit 2: 1 hr 45 mins (80 marks)
Unit 3: 2 hrs (90 marks)
Foundation Graded C - U
Unit 1: 1 hr 30 mins (65 marks)
Unit 2: 1 hr 30 mins (65 marks)
Unit 3: 1 hr 45 mins (75 marks)
Other Information
All students are required to have full mathematical equipment as these are essential to the course:
Scientific Calculator, Protractor, Ruler, Pencil, Black Pen, Pair of Compasses
