The Course

The WJEC GCSE in physical education will enable learners to engage in a practical course designed to inspire, motivate and challenge learners. The course involves both practical and theoretical work. The final assessment is weighted 50% practical and 50% theory. Learners will have the chance to perform in a number of different physical activities and will develop techniques and tactics as well as their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport. Learners will develop theoretical knowledge and understanding in the following areas: health, training and exercise; exercise physiology; movement analysis; psychology of sport and socio-cultural issues in sport.


You will develop skills in:

Critical thinking, confidence, communication, presentation, literacy, empathy, problem solving, teamwork and organisation.


Course Content

You will:

  • Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport.

  • Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport.

  • Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas.

  • Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport.

  • Understand the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and wellbeing.

  • Understand key socio-cultural influences which can affect people’s involvement in physical activity and sport in Wales and the wider world.
